The clients are desperate to bring their tourist information centre (TIC) up to date. Particular challenges arise with the Georgian building being Grade II listed. Currently it is tired looking, poorly lit and difficult for tourists to find their way around.
The TIC currently fulfils three functions: as a source of information for tourists, as a retail space for gifts and also a working back-office. Style Within took briefs from directors and staff to derive an optimised design: this provided a much more stylish interior with clearer signage for visitors, plenty of shelf space for retail sales and several improvements for wheelchair and other disabled access. The bespoke reception desk and sales desk will provide an immediate welcome for customers. Levelling the floor, improving the lighting and introducing more high-tech features will make this TIC a delight to visit once the project is complete. The design is also consistent with the company’s corporate identity and image, and strong brand, as well as reinforcing the engagement of the TIC with local tourist attractions.

The split level floor is unnecessary: the new design creates a single level, removing the need for the wheelchair ramp. Disabled access is also provided at street level.
The brief also included a makeover for the board room to create an attractive space for more regular use and for hire by local businesses and organisations. Currently it is drab, uninspiring and in need of refurbishment. Style Within took this opportunity to provide a more funky, yet practical and stylish design which the directors felt would attract others to hold meetings and other functions. All furniture, lighting and other features have been specified in detail: the project now awaits funding.
The lighting design provides for a much improved working environment and improved ambiance for all who use the TIC.
