People don’t think of floor stencilling as a means of adding interest to a floor. Yet, with the infinite variety of stencils (you can make one yourself), a stencilled floor is going to be unique.
Unique flooring
When stencils are advertised for sale, the picture almost always shows a stencilled wall. You’ll see a decorator on a ladder stencilling butterflies and flowers. But just turn the stencil through 90 degrees, and you can create a stencil pattern on the floor.
We want to give all our clients a unique feature in our interior designs. In one case, we had the opportunity to create a very special floor. Not only did we propose floor stencilling, we also suggested ageing the new floor through paint effects. This was a large period country property and we wanted to do something very special in this room. We know a number of paint specialists who can do this and, in our view, the effect is as good (and cheaper) than purchasing new, pre-aged floors!
Oak flooring
We acquired the cheapest engineered oak floor with shakes, splits and knots. We spent some time on hands and knees removing sharp edges and splinters. Then our paint specialist then aged the blemished features with a grey-white finish before applying a stain over the entire floor. We selected the stencil and designed its arrangement to scale using our floor plan to avoid furniture positions.
Our paint specialist carried out the floor stencilling before lacquering the whole surface in a matt finish. This would seal and protect the design.
