For this flat refurbishment to be a success, we had to ensure that the rooms were easy to move around and that everything was easy for our senior client to use and maintain.
We had already refurbished her property near Bath before our client asked us to renovate this apartment. The main brief was to replace the dated 70s kitchen and bathroom, although we were also asked to update and decorate the hall and lounge with its views over the sea. We were mindful of her special needs for a maintenance and user-friendly space.
The principal challenge was that these flats only had a limited electrical supply (and no gas), and the kitchen in particular was very small. We also had to pass more supplies from one side of the property to the other which meant taking down the kitchen ceiling. Being artex, we had it tested for asbestos and the positive result meant that we had to remove this through a registered contractor.
With some ingenuity we were able to install a very highly apportioned kitchen with a flush induction hob, oven and microwave oven, fridge freezer, and a small dishwasher. Shaker kitchen units work well with a quartz resin worktop and purple glass splashback above the hob. Vinyl tiles on the floor with vertical blind for privacy and roller blind for colour complete the look.
The old bathroom had an unsuitable bath and dated suite. It now has a large walk-in shower enclosure with stylish electric shower. Underfloor heating under vinyl tiles and a venetian and roller blind provide a modern feel. We also fitted a washing machine and tumble drier into this space, behind a lockable enclosure along with multi-point water heater and controls to make everything easy for our client to operate.
