Victorian sitting room
A sitting room makeover would give this Victorian home a contemporary lift. With a magnificent bay window, heavy curtains blocked out half the view of Clifton Downs. We turned the window into the room’s key feature, framing the magnificent scenery beyond.
A painting recently acquired by our clients inspired the colour scheme, with hints of pink and aqua. A neutral backdrop set this off perfectly.
How to dress a bay window
We designed the window dressing to open up the view over Clifton Downs. The old curtains covered the two side windows, permanently blocking out light and the landscape. With such high windows, roman blinds worked well, allowing natural light to flood in. We then framed the blinds with dress curtains and a pelmet covered in curtain fabric. Now, as you walk into the room, you are immediately drawn to this striking feature and the view beyond.
Contemporary sitting room furniture
In such a large room, we rearranged the floor plan to a more intimate space. We brought the large classic fabric sofas to life with vibrant and funky scatter cushions, and introduced a new storage footstool as a centrepiece for the seating area. This also solved the clutter problem.
We colour-matched the new TV cabinet to the walls, and painted its interior in a pink surprise. Stylish table lamps on a 5 Amp circuit and contemporary chandeliers provided a cosy ambiance. We introduced our client to some amazing fabrics including the animal print chair. The room cried out for a fireplace, so we installed this marble surround with new gas fire.
Our client can now enjoy her new sitting room to the full with its fantastic views and stylish, comfortable furnishings.
