Alcove Units

Making best use of space in a traditional British home

alcove lighting

Whether traditional, shaker, or contemporary, alcove units provide valuable storage and elegant display either side of a chimney breast. Every alcove is different so a bespoke design works best.

Freestanding …

A free-standing unit will be cheaper because the supplier can deliver it and walk away.  And you can take it with you when you move. The cabinetry will look great, but will have a gap around the edge.

… or built-in?

Built-in alcove units fit the space precisely. Installation costs will push up the price a bit, but they present a more finished look to the space.

Shelf spacing will depend on the items being fitted or stored.  Accessing connections might be better served with removable shelves.  For a row of DVDs, you’ll need space for your fingers, and display items need room to breathe. We’ve produced a separate page on key dimensions for furniture design.

Alcove units for TVs

Bespoke furniture is a great way to hide a TV.  With a “magic eye”, you can operate the kit behind closed doors.  Bifold doors have the added advantage of opening conveniently out of the way to one side only.

Retrofit alcove units

For this Edwardian sitting room, we fitted mouldings to the cabinets to complement the existing decor. Placing a pair of oil lamps on top filled the empty space, drawing the eye to the ceiling.

Sideboards

A pair of sideboards may be sufficient. Here, with table lamps and colour-matched speakers, sideboards flank a chimney breast with a stunning painting taking pride of place.

Alcove lighting looks fantastic with warm white LED strip-lights rebated into the shelves.

Bespoke furniture

We design alcove storage as part of our standard home design service.  You can read more in our bespoke furniture page.
