Small bathrooms present particular challenges for interior designers. Clients wrestle with concerns about removing a bath, and where to fit all the storage. That’s before they even consider the lighting and heating. We have come up with a number of novel designs, and this small bathroom renovation was no exception. You can read separately about our more general designs for small bathrooms.
As a family home, the brief was to retain a bath, potentially for grandchildren and for any future re-sale. Our clients had already embraced the idea of a short, 1500mm long shower-bath. In fact a standard 1700 bath would not have fitted. A shower-bath is a good compromise for small rooms. They come in two main shapes; cube as here, or P-shaped.
We designed the room in 3D to help the clients see how the room would look and function. Re-orientating the basin and WC from the original layout, and hanging the door on the opposite side provided additional space for a laundry bin and hotel-inspired towel rack. It also offered a pleasing view of the handbasin with glass splashback on approaching the room. The shorter shower-bath created useful space behind the shower for the new plumbing and shampoo niche. There was also space here for useful open storage.
Bathroom Lighting and Electrics
We install plenty of lighting in our bathroom designs; here we fitted six recessed LED downlighters for the main task lighting. Our electricians installed an LED striplight in the rebate above the WC, and a marker light in the shower niche. These provide low level lighting for night-time visits on their own switch. Then there is the illuminated cabinet with flattering lights to the side of the face.
The new, low-noise extractor fan in the loft space clears steam with a whisper. Electric underfloor heating warms the space from beneath an oak effect vinyl tile floor, with a dual-fuel towel warmer on the far wall.
Bathroom Glass Splashback
The feature pink-purple splashback adds colour, picking out elements of the floral roller blind. Wall mounted taps and wall-hung suite make the small room feel spacious, and easier to keep clean.
